Updated school physicals are required to be on-file with your children’s school within 30 days of the first day of the academic year. While your child’s pediatrician may be booked weeks in advance and unable to schedule you for an appointment, AFC Urgent Care Northern Liberties works with school districts throughout Philadelphia to make sure students are healthy enough to participate in in-person classes and other school activities prior to the start of the year.
What is Assessed During a School Physical?
A school physical starts like any traditional doctor’s visit, with one of our physicians taking your child’s vitals and checking their height, weight, vision and hearing. We will go over your child’s medical history, including immunizations or any previous injuries that could potentially affect their ability to participate. If your child is going to be participating in a school or local athletic program that requires an on-file physical, we will be able to perform the sports physical in conjunction with the school required exam. If a medical condition is detected that could affect your child’s ability to participate in class or in their athletic program, AFC Urgent Care Northern Liberties will be able to work with your pediatrician or a specialist to ensure they get the care they need to be able to participate safely. During your child’s physical, a medical provider will be performing:
- Testing hearing and vision
- Checking weight, height, blood pressure and BMI
- Health screening and checking resting heart rate
- Examination of ear, nose and throat for potential illnesses and conditions
- Exam to detect scoliosis in the spine
- Going over medical history
- Updating necessary vaccinations (this will require an additional charge)
When Should I Schedule a Physical?
An updated physical is required before the first day of school each year through the first year your child is in college. The updated physical must be submitted within 30 days of the first day of school. Getting your child in to have a physical early allows you to beat the rush to get in in the weeks before school begins and allows for any necessary care prior to the first day. If your child is planning on participating in school athletic programs, an updated physical is required before the first practice of the season. If your child is a multi-season athlete, they will likely require a physical before each sport begins.
